Mushky’s Challah Recipe

Mushky’s Challah Recipe:

  • 4 tbsp yeast
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 5.5 cups warm water
  • 4 eggs
  • 1.3 cups of oil
  • 2 tbsp salt
  • 5 lbs flour

Instructions: Dissolve yeast in warm water then add the sugar. Let it sit for around five minutes so the yeast can react. Add eggs and oil, and combine the rest of the mixture by beginning to add flour gradually, mixing it in and incorporating it between each pour. Half-way through the bag of flour, add the salt and combine (Mushky says this step is SUPER important). Then finish off pouring and incorporating the flour in intervals.

Once the dough is formed, cover with a damp towel and allow it to rise. Braid your challah and then egg wash it and pour your desired topping over it. Preheat oven to 350 and bake for an hour.

Note from Lexi: I let the initial dough batch rise overnight, which is what Mushky does. I’ve made tons of challah recipes and this is absolutely my favorite. Definitely let it rise overnight! Then braid it, and let it rise again for about an hour. Put it in the oven and you’re good to go! Suggested toppings/mix-ins: Everything but the Bagel, chocolate chips, raisins, really anything!
